Subject: Fuel costs: fuel duty, fuel affordability

Dear [MP NAME],

I am writing as your constituent about the cost of petrol and diesel. I would be grateful for your view, and for the Government's position, on the points below.

1. Fuel Duty
Fuel Duty is currently 52.95p a litre, and is due to change to 55.95p from 1 January 2027 and 57.95p from 1 March 2027. HMRC reports Fuel Duty receipts of about £24.25 billion in the financial year 2025 to 2026 (provisional). What is the Government's assessment of the effect of Fuel Duty, including any scheduled changes, on households and businesses in this constituency?

2. Fuel affordability
The UK average petrol price was 175.3p a litre and diesel 200.0p in the week commencing 12 October 2026. What assessment has been made of fuel costs for lower-income households and for people who depend on driving for work or care?

I would appreciate a written reply, including any figures or sources you rely on.

Kind regards,
